Ford has solidified its position as the second-largest electric vehicle (EV) seller in the United States (U.S.), trailing only behind Tesla, after reporting a major surge in EV sales for Q2 2024.
For Q2 2024, Ford sold 23,957 EVs, up from 14,843 units in the same period last year and a 61% year-over-year increase. This growth was driven by Ford’s EV models, particularly the F-150 Lightning and Mustang Mach-E. The F-150 Lightning, which is the U.S. top-selling electric truck, saw a 77% increase in sales with 7,902 units delivered. As for the Mustang Mach-E, its sales rose 46%, reaching its best first-half performance since launch with 22,234 units sold.
Interestingly, the success of Ford’s EV lineup also brought new buyers to the company, where it reported that 62% of F-150 Lightning and 54% of Mustang Mach-E sales are to buyers new to Ford.
Moreover, Ford’s E-Transit van also contributed to the company’s strong performance with a 96% year-over-year increase in Q2 sales, reaching 3,410 units. In total, Ford has sold 44,180 EVs in the first half of 2024, marking a 72% increase from the previous year.
In contrast to Tesla, the company still dominates the market with 443,956 global deliveries in Q2. Although Ford’s performance indicates it is making significant strides in closing the gap in the U.S. EV market.

Recently, Ford CEO Jim Farley confirmed the company’s strategy shift towards smaller, more affordable EVs with a $30,000 EV by 2027 to compete more effectively with Tesla and BYD. Farley further voiced this viewpoint in an interview with CNBC stating, “You have to make a radical change as an [automaker] to get to a profitable EV. The first thing we have to do is really put all of our capital toward smaller, more affordable EVs.”
With Ford’s EV plans making more strides including its plan to open an Advanced Electric Vehicle Development Center in Long Beach, California, Ford’s strong performance in Q2 positions it well for future growth. As the industry starts seeing the rankings of EV sales from automakers, Ford currently being at second place will definitely get more notice from the EV market.
