After Ford’s release its Q2 2024 earnings result on its electric vehicles (EVs), the company has announced a major expansion of its BlueCruise hands-free driving technology, now available in 17 countries worldwide.

According to Ford, this expansion arrived after the European Commission approved the use of BlueCruise in 15 European nations, adding to its existing availability in the United States and Canada. The advanced driver assistance system, which allows for hands-free driving on designated highways, now covers over 133,000 km (82,744 miles) of “Blue Zones” across Europe.

Moreover, this expansion enables Ford customers to enjoy hands-free driving on long road trips spanning multiple countries, potentially covering up to 3,000 km (1,864 miles) from Sweden to Italy.

Jim Farley, Ford’s CEO, expressed pride in the company’s global Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) team in a post on X stating, “BlueCruise road trips across Europe just got easier. With the European Commission’s approval, Ford’s BlueCruise is now available in 15 European countries (17 countries globally, including the U.S. & Canada). That means customers can access more than 82,744 miles of designated highways across Europe. Proud of the work our global ADAS and Blue Cruise team have done to make this possible!”

As of now, the system is approved for use in Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Great Britain, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden, in addition to North America, according to Ford.

Ford’s BlueCruise Growth

BlueCruise has seen rapid adoption since its launch, with over 420,000 equipped Ford and Lincoln vehicles on roads globally. In the U.S. and Canada alone, customers have logged more than 3.1 million hours and 213 million miles using the system.

The technology allows drivers to operate their vehicles hands-free on designated highways while maintaining visual attention on the road. It uses a driver-facing camera to ensure the driver’s eyes remain on the road, even when wearing sunglasses. The system controls steering, acceleration, braking, and maintains safe distances from other vehicles.

Interestingly, Ford is offering new Mustang Mach-E customers in countries with Blue Zones a 90-day free trial of BlueCruise. After the trial, customers can opt for an annual or monthly subscription.

Furthermore, this expansion marks a major milestone for Ford, as BlueCruise becomes the most widely available Level 2 hands-free driving system approved by regulators in Europe. It also represents a profitable venture for the company, with CEO Jim Farley previously revealing that the feature carries a 70% profit margin.

As Ford continues to invest in and expand its autonomous driving capabilities, BlueCruise is set to play a strong role in the company’s growth strategy, potentially transforming long-distance driving and daily commutes for its customers worldwide.
