The Anaheim Police Department has stated that the reason for taking EVs into its patrol fleet was because of concerns regarding national supply chain issues, aging patrol vehicles, and delivery delays of new patrol vehicles. With these concerns in mind, they have changed their approach to using EVs that can take up the challenge and assist in police work.

Chief Rick Armendariz of the Anaheim Police Department highlighted their commitment to protecting the public stating, “Due to our patrol vehicle shortage, we had to seek out alternative vehicle options, which led us to explore utilizing Teslas as police vehicles,” said Chief Rick Armendariz. “We are enhancing public safety for Anaheim by getting patrol vehicles into service faster.”

Furthermore, the Anaheim Police Department collaborated with Unplugged Performance’s UP.FIT program. This program had designed and outfitted the Tesla Model Ys according to the police department’s standards. Also, the chosen Tesla Model Y EVs quickly altered to meet the specifications that the Anaheim Police Department has for their patrol cars. These include fast acceleration, plentiful storage, affordability, and low requirements for maintenance.

With the outcome of the pilot program being monitored, the police department will assess the performance, reliability, and cost-effectiveness of the Model Y patrol fleet. As Tesla’s Model Y possesses a range of 279 miles with 455 hp, the current specs of this EV model can prove to be fitted for high-level police work.

Moreover, the chance to save on gas comes as an advantage for both the Anaheim Police Department and the environment. With projections hoping that the pilot program will bring good results, the Anaheim Police Department will consider bringing more EVs into their patrol fleet.

The new electrified patrol fleet of the Anaheim Police Department is a first step for other police departments to adopt EVs into their patrol fleet, showing a rising opportunity depending on how well the pilot program goes. Nonetheless, fitting EVs into police work can be the innovative jump that expands the EV market in better aspects.
