Hyundai Motor Group recently announced its plans to power its upcoming Georgia Metaplant with solar energy for its electric vehicle (EV) production, taking a big step towards sustainable manufacturing.

Hyundai signed a 15-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Matrix Renewables to provide up to 147 MW of energy from its Stillhouse Solar Project to the company. This highlights Hyundai’s dedication to cutting down its carbon footprint and taking on more renewable energy solutions for its EV production. The Stillhouse Solar Project is expected to start commercial operations by October 2025. With Hyundai anticipating to receive around 378 GWh of solar electricity annually, the results will lead to the reduction of 140,000 tons of carbon emissions annually.

Moreover, the solar energy will also power Hyundai’s operations at three affiliated plants: Hyundai Mobis North America Electrified Powertrain, Hyundai Steel Georgia, and Hyundai Transys Georgia Powertrain. With Hyundai incorporating solar energy into its manufacturing process, the company will be influencing more sustainable solutions to its supply chain.

With recent developments of other companies creating more plants to enhance EV production in their production such as Honda’s Ohio EV Hub and Toyota’s 1.4 billion investment for its electric SUV production in its Indiana plant, Hyundai’s further steps of making responsible and sustainable manufacturing with solar energy set it apart from the rest.

As the Georgia Metaplant represents Hyundai’s first EV mass-production plant, the plant will also produce EVs for Hyundai’s sister company, Kia. As Hyundai is thriving in U.S. EV sales because of its IONIQ 5, the company is innovating the EV manufacturing process and exuding influence on the rest of the EV industry to consider the use of solar energy in its manufacturing practices.
