Kia has set a new record in the electric vehicle (EV) market in the United States (U.S.) by selling around 5,000 EVs in April, marking the first time in history the company achieved this sales record for EVs in a single month. 

Despite Kia’s slight decline of 3.6% in total vehicle sales with 65,754 units in April, the company’s EV sales saw a record growth in doubling in volume compared to last month. Specifically, the surge in EV sales in the U.S. marked a 144% increase year-over-year. As a result, the company’s EV sales in the U.S. accounted for around 8% of its total volume. 

Eric Watson, vice president of sales operations at Kia America, expressed the new record achieved through the company’s EV lineup stating, “The impressive sales momentum generated by Kia’s EV and electrified models in the first quarter continued to accelerate in April with best-ever EV and SUV performances.”

Kia’s success in its EV sales comes from its EV lineup, where its EV6 and EV9 set new records. The EV6 had an increase of 65% year-over-year and the EV9 witnessed 1,572 units sold in April. As sales are going up for the EV6, the launch of its updated EV6 during Q2 2024 and its EV6 GT launching in early Q4 2024 will potentially contribute to the company’s path of reaching new EV sale records in the future. 

As for the Kia EV9, it has garnered global attention for its outstanding attributes that have made the company stand out in the EV market and gain leverage over its competitors. With the EV9 receiving the 2024 World Car of the Year and 2024 World Electric Car awards, it also recently received the ‘Best of the Best’ award in the Cars and Motorcycles category at the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2024. 

With Kia’s EV lineup holding the company at stable grounds for success, the record-breaking EV sales in a single month for April will be remembered and taken note of by other companies aiming to reach similar success in the EV market.
