General Motors (GM) announced the discontinuation of its Chevrolet Malibu model to shift its focus to electric vehicle (EV) production. The decision to discontinue the Chevrolet Malibu model is part of GM’s strategic shift with plans to repurpose the Fairfax Assembly Plant in Kansas for the next-generation Chevy Bolt EV.

Chevrolet’s Malibu model is manufactured at the company’s Fairfax plant and the plan for its discontinuation is scheduled for November 2024 to modify the plant’s production for its Ultium-based Chevrolet Bolt EV. GM ended the Bolt’s production in December 2023 but with the surging popularity regarding the model’s best year ever for sales, the company decided to revamp it instead.

Despite the Malibu model being one of Chevrolet’s flagship models since its introduction in 1964 and its revival in 1997, the ending of its production will signal a major change to GM’s focus on EVs as the company had stated to go full-electric by 2035. Moreover, GM will also pause the production of its Cadillac XT4 after January 2025 to accommodate the modification of the plant.

Kevin Kelly, a spokesperson for GM, confirmed the decision to end the production of the Malibu model stating, “To facilitate the installation of tooling and other plant modifications, after nine-generations and over 10 million global sales, GM will end production of the Chevrolet Malibu in November 2024.”

As GM prepares to steer into its plans to be full-electric, the next-generation Bolt EV will serve as a cornerstone to its goals and pay the favor to the Malibu model. Whether the Malibu will eventually make a comeback possibly as an EV remains unclear, but GM’s focus now is on advancing the transition to electric mobility.
