BYD has revealed its updated 2025 Seal electric vehicle (EV). The new model, set to launch on August 8, 2024, features advanced technology and design improvements while maintaining its position as an affordable electric sedan.

One of the most notable upgrades is the addition of a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor, supplied by Robosense, a company backed by BYD and Xiaomi. This new feature is expected to enhance the mode’s Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) capabilities, aligning with BYD’s broader strategy to invest in intelligent driving technology. The company recently announced a $14 billion investment in this area and claims to be leading in L2-level intelligent driving deployment in China.

Aesthetically, the 2025 Seal EV showcases subtle yet notable changes. BYD has introduced a new “Sky Purple” color option and replaced the “Build Your Dreams” inscription on the trunk with a bold, red BYD logo. The model maintains its sleek design, featuring thin headlights, a sloped hood, and a trapeze-shaped air intake.

BYD Seal EV continues to be based on BYD’s e-Platform 3.0, offering two battery options: 61.44 kWh and 80.64 kWh. The model can achieve an estimated range of 510 to 650 km (317 to 404 miles). Also, the platform also supports a high-voltage 800V system for improved charging efficiency.

In terms of performance, the Seal EV offers various powertrain options. The entry-level model features a single rear-mounted motor producing 228 horsepower, while higher trims offer up to 523 horsepower with all-wheel drive (AWD).

While pricing details for the 2025 model have not been officially announced, it is projected to start around 179,800 yuan ($25,000), similar to the recently launched Seal EV Honor Edition.

Despite a slight dip in EV sales over the past two months, BYD achieved record sales of over 342,000 new energy vehicles (NEVs) in July. The new Seal EV would be a strong component to help boost sales further, especially as Chinese buyers increasingly seek EVs with advanced technological features.

Significantly, BYD’s recently signed a landmark deal with Uber to deploy 100,000 EVs across its global network and collaborate on autonomous driving technology. As a result, this makes the company’s presence reach new heights on the global stage. As BYD introduces its EV lineup with the 2025 Seal EV, the competition in the EV market is further enhanced as affordable EVs lead the charge.
