As the transition to electric mobility through electric vehicles (EVs) is held at a higher value in the United States (U.S.) more than ever, the country has now witness a major surge in EV infrastructure development. This comes from the Quarterly Update from the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Program, tracking the progress in expanding the country’s charging network.

For the past three months, the U.S. has now over 13,000 new charging ports. This brings up the total of charging ports to 183,000 across the country according to the US Joint Office of Energy and Transportation’s Q2 2024 update report

In detail, the Q2 2024 NEVI update also highlights that there are now eight NEVI DC fast charging stations in six states and 33 public charging ports in operation. Furthermore, 36 states in the U.S. have initiated NEVI solicitations with 23 states securing agreements for over 550 charging station locations. Notably, Hawaii, Maine, and Vermont have opened their first NEVI Formula Program-funded stations in the last three months.

As a result, momentous and historical milestones have been made with Wisconsin becoming the first state to award funding to Tribal Nations for NEVI charging station and five states have already released their second round of conditional award including Maine, Pennsylvania, Colorado, Ohio, and Kentucky.

All of this aligns with the Biden administration’s goal of reaching 500,000 public charging ports by 2030 and now the country is more than one thirds to its goal. With exponential growht being tracked for the U.S. and the expansion of EV charging infrastructure making history through continous progress, the goal to reaching a future that is dependent only on EVs is coming closer with the NEVI program serving as the drive that leads the way to electric mobility.
