Tesla has made major changes to its Cybertruck electric vehicle (EV) lineup and availability, despite previously claiming over 1 million reservations for the electric pickup truck.

As of now, Tesla has stopped taking orders for the base model rear-wheel-drive (RWD) Cybertruck, which was priced at $61,000 and promised a 250-mile range. Instead, Tesla is now offering immediate delivery of higher-end models, with prices starting at $99,990 for the dual-motor Foundation Series trim.

The currently available models include the $99,990 dual-motor Foundation Series with a 318-mile range, deliverable as early as this month, and the $119,990 tri-motor Foundation Cyberbeast with a 301-mile range, available from October. Both trims come with additional features such as Full Self-Driving (FSD) capability and premium accessories.

In addition, Tesla plans to offer a range extender battery pack, scheduled for production in early 2025. This add-on, estimated to cost around $16,000, would increase the dual-motor Cybertruck’s range from 340 to over 470 miles. However, it will occupy about a third of the truck’s bed space and add significant weight.

Tesla’s Cybertruck has made many heads turn in the EV market, where it ranked as the fifth most registered EV in the U.S. in May 2024 with 3,907 units registered. Moreover, Cox Automotive reports that it sold nearly 4,800 units in July, making it the best-selling vehicle in the U.S. priced over $100,000. However, a Cox spokesperson cautioned, “They have sold more than 16,000 so far, but sustained high volume at that price point will be a challenge.”

As Tesla’s Cybertruck continues to be delivered to its buyers, the company’s focus on high-end models and additional features like the range extender suggests a strategy aimed at maximizing profitability in the face of production challenges and shifting market demands as the EV market continues to evolve.
