Tesla’s Cybertruck electric vehicle (EV) is making its international debut, with deliveries now underway in Mexico and plans to enter the Canadian market by late October.

Mexico Takes the Lead

Tesla initiated its first Cybertruck deliveries in Mexico, making it the first country outside the United States (U.S.) to receive the EV. Social media has been abuzz with images and videos showing Cybertrucks being transported to delivery centers across the country. The move aligns with Tesla’s earlier communicated timeline, which projected September/October deliveries for Mexico.

Notably, the Cybertruck had already made an appearance in Mexico earlier this year, with Nuevo León governor Samuel García Sepúlveda taking it for a test drive. Nuevo León is slated to be the home of Tesla’s future Gigafactory Mexico, though the project is currently on hold.

Canada’s Turn Coming Soon

While some were surprised to see Mexico receiving Cybertrucks before Canada, Tesla has now provided a clearer timeline for its northern neighbors. Siddhant Awasthi, Tesla’s Cybertruck Program Manager, announced on social media that deliveries in Canada are “likely” to start in late October, around a month from now.

Tesla began inviting buyers in both Canada and Mexico to configure their Foundation Series Cybertrucks about a month ago, nine months after the EV’s U.S. debut. This move set the stage for the current rollout in these North American markets.

Financial Incentives for Canadian Buyers

As Tesla prepares for Canadian deliveries, there have been some notable changes regarding the EV’s cost structure in the country:

  • Luxury Tax Exemption: Initially, the Cybertruck was expected to be subject to Canada’s federal luxury tax. However, Tesla’s website has since been updated to remove this line item, as the Cybertruck’s gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) exceeds the 3,856 kg (8,501 lbs) threshold for the tax.
  • Provincial Rebate: In British Columbia, business buyers can now benefit from a $10,000 rebate on Cybertruck purchases.
  • Potential Federal Rebate: Tesla is working to make the Cybertruck eligible for a federal rebate of up to $10,000, further enhancing its appeal to Canadian buyers.

Current Production and Delivery Status

Tesla is currently delivering only the Foundation Series Cybertrucks, which come fully loaded with all options for an additional $20,000. These high-end models are priced at around $100,000. The company has reportedly worked through its U.S. reservation backlog, and new orders can now be fulfilled relatively quickly.

However, as Tesla expands into new markets, it may soon face the challenge of exhausting the pool of buyers willing to pay premium prices for the Foundation Series. This could prompt the company to start delivering non-Foundation Series Cybertrucks in the near future.

While Tesla is making strides in North America, the company faces challenges in bringing the Cybertruck to other global markets, particularly in Europe and Asia. The EV’s size and design may not be suitable for countries with narrower streets and different regulatory environments.

CEO Elon Musk has hinted at the possibility of developing a smaller Cybertruck configuration to cater to international markets. While not confirmed, this redesign could be Tesla’s best option for launching the Cybertruck beyond North America.

As production ramps up at Gigafactory Texas and deliveries expand across North America, all eyes are on Tesla to see how the Cybertruck will perform in its new markets and whether it will indeed make the leap to a truly global presence.
