Fiat is set to revolutionize electric vehicle (EV) charging with a new built-in cable system. Starting with the upcoming Grande Panda model in 2025, Fiat plans to integrate AC charging cables directly into its EVs.

According to Autocar, Fiat is seeking to make the action of plugging in the AC charger more user-friendly. The innovative solution features a retractable cable stored behind the front fascia, typically concealed by the Fiat logo. This sprung cable can extend to reach nearby charging points, eliminating the need for drivers to handle and store potentially dirty cables in their vehicle’s trunk or frunk.

Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares expressed the importance of this development stating, “You have these fantastic cars – full of technology, great materials, nice trims – and the first thing you do is you put the cable on the ground, and it’s dirty and you throw it back in your trunk. That’s not very high technology.”

Moreover, the integrated cable will be capable of AC charging at speeds up to 7.4 kW, providing around 120 miles of range to the Grande Panda’s 44 kWh battery in about 4 hours and 10 minutes. For faster charging needs, the EV will still feature a separate DC charging port on the side, supporting speeds up to 100 kW.

As a result, Fiat’s decision to implement this feature stems from a desire to make charging more accessible and practical for all EV owners. Furthermore, the company plans to extend this technology to future EV models, potentially setting a new standard in the industry for user-friendly charging solutions.

The Fiat Grande Panda, which will be the first to showcase this technology, is projected to be one of the most affordable EVs in the market when it launches in early 2025. The company is also expected to launch its price starting at under 25,000 euros ($28,500) as part of its 125th-anniversary celebration.
