In the realm of advanced electric vehicle (EV) battery technology, CATL has launched a groundbreaking new battery designed specifically for electric buses called the Tectrans Bus Edition.
The Tectrans Bus Edition includes an energy density of 175 Wh/kg, claimed to be the highest in the electric bus industry. With a lifespan of up to 15 years or 1.5 million km (932,000 miles) and a warranty of 10 years or 1 million km (621,400 miles), the Tectrans Bus Edition also comes with an IP69 waterproof rating, capable of withstanding 72 hours of water immersion.
Moreover, CATL claims this new battery represents a 22% improvement in energy density compared to its previous generation, setting a new standard for the industry.
The Tectrans Bus Edition has attracted considerable attention within the industry, with 13 vehicle companies, including Yutong Bus, Golden Dragon, and Dongfeng Motor, partnering with CATL. This new battery will be used to power 80 different electric bus models, with mass production expected to commence soon, although specific timelines have not been announced.
Hao Huan, CTO of CATL’s domestic passenger division, noted that this new electric bus battery “pays tribute to the 10 years of vigorous development of China’s commercial vehicle market.”
CATL remains a leader in the global EV battery market, holding a 37.6% share from January to July 2024, according to SNE Research. The company powers over 385,000 buses worldwide and is expanding its production capabilities with new factories either planned or under construction in Germany, Thailand, Hungary, Indonesia, and the United States (U.S.).
As part of CATL’s strategy to enter the commercial vehicle sector, the Tectrans Bus Edition is set to have a substantial influence on the electric bus industry. As a result, the Tectrans Bus Edition aims to extend the operational lifespan of electric buses, lower the total cost of ownership for bus operators, enhance the range and efficiency of electric buses, and improve the durability and reliability of electric bus fleets.
As the battery enters mass production, it will be interesting to see how it performs in real-world conditions and whether it lives up to its impressive specifications.
