BMW is set to electrify its compact electric vehicle (EV) lineup with the introduction of new all-electric versions of its 1 Series and 2 Series models, aiming to expand its presence in the growing EV market with these affordable offerings.

BMW 1 Series and 2 Series

According to AutoCar, BMW is developing two new electric models, tentatively named i1 and i2, which will be sold alongside their internal combustion engine (ICE) counterparts. The i1, expected to launch in 2027, will be available as an electric hatchback or sedan. The i2, aimed for release in 2028, is being positioned as the successor to the i3 and will come in crossover and coupe-style versions.

Bernd Koerber, BMW’s Head of Product and Brand Management, expressed the company’s strategy to AutoCar stating, “Of course they have lower profitability, but they also fulfill a different purpose in getting younger customers and developing [BMW] in certain markets.”

Moreover, these EVs will be built on BMW’s advanced Neue Klasse platform, specifically the NBx iteration designed for front and all-wheel drive (AWD) models. The platform promises improvements in range, charging speed, and overall efficiency. In addition, BMW plans to launch the electric i1 in 2027 and the electric i2 in 2028.

Notably, BMW’s strategy for this move aligns with the broader industry trend towards electrification and the increasing demand for affordable EVs. Furthermore, as BMW moves forward with its electrification plans, the introduction of the i1 and i2 represents a major step in its strategy to electrify its entire lineup and cater to evolving preferences for buyers of all demographics in the global EV market.
