Denza, the premium electric vehicle (EV) brand majority-owned by BYD, has launched pre-sales for its Z9 GT, a high-performance electric wagon set to challenge established luxury brands both in China and abroad.
The Z9 GT, which starts at a surprisingly competitive 339,800 yuan (around $47,620), is built on BYD’s advanced e3 technology platform. This new model arrives with exceptional specs including a tri-motor setup that delivers nearly 1,000 horsepower and acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds for the all-electric version.
Available in both plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and battery electric vehicle (BEV) variants, the Z9 GT offers a combined range of up to 1,100 km (683 miles) for the PHEV model and 630 km (391 miles) for the BEV version. As for the EV’s dimensions, it measures slightly larger at 5,180mm in length and 1,990mm in width.
Designed by Wolfgang Egger, former chief designer at Audi, the Z9 GT features a sleek and sporty exterior reminiscent of high-end European wagons. The interior comes with luxurious amenities including multiple screens, a Devialet sound system, and even two refrigerators: a 4-liter unit for front passengers and a 10-liter unit in the rear.
Moreover, Denza is offering the Z9 GT in five trim levels, with prices ranging from 339,800 to 419,800 yuan ($47,600 to $58,850). The competitive pricing strategy suggests Denza’s ambitions to boost sales and market share in the premium EV segment.
The launch of the Z9 GT marks a new milestone for Denza, which began as a joint venture between BYD and Daimler (now Mercedes-Benz). BYD increased its stake to 90% in 2022, repositioning Denza as a global high-end brand. The Z9 GT joins Denza’s existing lineup, which includes the D9 minivan and the N7 and N8 crossovers.
As Denza expands its product line and global presence, the success of the Z9 GT will play a crucial role in establishing the brand as a serious contender in the premium EV market worldwide. Deliveries of the Z9 GT are scheduled to start in September, with a sedan version called the Z9, set to follow in Q4.
